The recovery of personal spending in Japan has been confirmed by a recent survey by The Nikkei. It is clearly showing that Japanese consumers are spending more for cheaper items for fashion (Uniqlo, H&M, Coen,…) and restaurants (Family Restaurants, Mc Donald,…), but at the same time, they are also spending more for luxury goods such as imported wristwatches priced over 12,000 USD or overseas travels.

Is this paradox a long term trend supported by a better understanding of the real value of the products by Japanese consumers ?

My understanding is that Japanese are still spending a lot in fashion, accessories, luxury, outings, but that they are both volatile in term of fashion and very mature in term of quality. They follow very closely the fashion trends and therefore prefer to spend less for more of it while investing in high quality luxury brands that are considered as an investment.

Isetan Mitsukoshi department stores and fashion shopping mall Lumine are planning to launch their summer sales campaigns 2 weeks later around mid of July instead of 1^st of July.

In the meantime, other department stores like Daimaru or Matsuzakaya will stick to the traditional date of the 1^st of July.

It is weird to see that there is no coordination between the department stores operators. Even if the sales period in Japan are not controlled in term of dates, we can imagine that this will for sure increase the competition and the confusion as these department stores are often carrying similar brands and also located in the same areas !

Japan Retail sales rose 3.5% on the year to 10.77 trillion yen in February 2012. Sales at large retailers, including department stores and supermarkets, rose 1.2% to 1.46 trillion yen. But same-store sales at those retailers grew 0.2%, with department store sales sliding 0.5% and supermarket sales rising 0.5%. Sales at convenience store rose 8.8% to 708.2 billion yen, while same-store sales increased 4.4%.

Department store operators are spending big money on extensive renovations at stores in major cities, hoping to attract new customers amid a 15-year market contraction.

Sogo Yokohama to be completed by the autumn of 2013 for an estimated cost of 1 billion yen. Major changes will be the increase by over 40% of the tenants, to grow to 25% the women’s wear section and better organize the segmentation, the develop the food and kitchen ware sections.

Takashimaya Yokohama to be completed by autumn 2013 for an estimated cost of 15 billion yen.

Matsuzakaya Nagoya store to be completed by autumn 2013 for an estimated cost of 4.6 billion yen.

Takashimaya JR Nagoya station to be completed by spring 2012 for an estimated cost of 1.5 billion yen. Major changes is to expand the cosmetics section.

Hankyu Umeda will increase its floor space by 40% to 84,000 sq. meters.

Isetan Shinjuku women’s wear section to be completed by spring 2013 for an estimated cost of 9 billion yen.

Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi main store to be completed by spring 2015 for an estimated cost of 9 billion yen.

Daimaru Tokyo store to be expanded by 40% to 46,000 sq. meters this autumn 2012.

Mitsui Fudosan will open the Diver City Tokyo Plaza retail complex on April 19^th, 2012. The new waterfront complex will be home to 154 stores including the first Old Navy store in Japan, the 2^nd American Eagle Outfitters, Uniqlo, H&M, Forever 21, Zara, Bershka, Coach, Burberry Black and Blue Label, Armani Jeans, Beauty & Youth by United Arrows, Beams Lights and of course, a large food court offering 700 seats and some entertainments like the miniature Gundam theme park.

Information : Sales at department stores in Japan rose 0.8% on the year in December to 731.8 billion yen, marking the first increase in six months, the Japan Department Stores Association said Thursday.

Sales at department stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area rose 0.3% to 177 billion yen, up for the first time in six months.

For all of 2011 nationwide, sales fell 2% to 6.15 trillion yen, the 15th straight annual decline.

Sales at Tokyo department stores for the full year slid 3.3% to 1.49 trillion yen, shrinking for the fourth consecutive year.

The Japanese consumers still have money to spend on fashion and luxury brands. The growing bonus and the strong Yen is offering interesting sales perspective for all the brands that would be able to reflect the strong Yen into their retail prices.

TOKYO (Nikkei)–Bonus payments this winter grew by an average 3.07% on the year 2011, rising for the 2^nd year in a row, according to a survey released by Nikkei Inc.

The weighted average bonus came to 739,360 yen before taxes (almost 10,000USD or 7,600 EURO), according to the poll’s tally of 619 companies as of Dec. 5. While the pace of increase topped 3% for the first time in 6 years, the payout figure was in the 700,000 yen range for a 3^rd straight year.

Manufacturers whose earnings climbed in fiscal 2010 helped to buoy the bonus figures.

Canon Inc. topped the list with a 1.24 million yen payment, reflecting its solid earnings performance for the year ended December 2010.

Meanwhile, winter bonuses at non-manufacturers were lower for a 4^th consecutive year. “This year’s winter bonuses, including those at small and midsize firms, remain severe even for the past 10 years,” says Haruka Kazama, economist at the Mizuho Research Institute. Consequently, Kazama believes consumers may remain cautious about spending.

The strong yen and the fallout from the European debt crisis could erode earnings and impact summer 2012 bonuses.
